Disparity in prosperity

I found this on Yahoo! News. How sad yet true.

Katrina Exposes American Poverty
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050924/ap_on_re_us/katrina_poverty_exposed

It is so humbling for the great American nation to have dirty linen exposed through the force of nature by the hand of God. We always see images of America through sitcoms, movies, etc. But who knows the rough side of America? According to the above article, about 12.45% (37million) of the population lives below the poverty line and the number has been increasing since 2001 (What a special year!)

The truth is that poverty in America has been around since history started in this great nation. Nothing has changed - it is still expressed in racial terms.

A quote by President George W. Bush from the above article:
"As all of us saw on television, there is also some deep, persistent poverty in this region as well....And that poverty has roots in a history of racial discrimination, which cut off generations from the opportunity of America. We have a duty to confront this poverty with bold action."

I'm sorry to say this, that for as long as the focus/priority of the government is on other things, the 37million will continue to grow. Democracy? Bollocks!
