In the midst of all the Chinese New Year visiting & greetings, I started thinking of my friends - those I haven't seen in ages nor talked to in eons. I'm such a terrible friend :'( So I made a mental list of the friends I have to meet up with & I've given myself till end of this year to do so. It's a pretty long time so I'd better not be such a procrastinator.
Sal - friend from primary school. She's the only friend I truly keep in touch with since primary school. Amazing how we 'split' when she went off to Oz to finish her schooling & back in Singapore after that but still managed to stay in touch. Even more amazing was that we went to Law School in England, except in different cities - she in Notts & I in Leeds. An accomplished lawyer she is & a friend to a humble teacher like myself.
Woman - that's how we address each other. My friend from uni & flatmate in Year 2. Crazy as can be, that's what we are. We got to know each other through someone else & we've been pretty firm since. A great lover of animals & even greater lover of God. :)
Kim - another uni friend. Great shopping, coffee & clubbing kaki back in the days where the student life was The Life. I remember going on the same flight as her to Leeds when she was a Fresher while I was going back for Year 2 after the summer break. All that seems so long ago (well, it really was a long time ago). A city chic & definitely someone who appreciates & shares the love for Manolos & Jimmy Choos :)
Fay - friend from secondary school. Actually, we are birthday twins. She got married last year & the last time I saw her was at her wedding. Sure, she's certainly got more commitments now but that shouldn't be an excuse for not meeting up with her.
Angela - otherwise known as my 'por kay'. Don't know why, it's a greeting we used since sec school. It's been ages since we last met. I was her maid-of-honour at her wedding. Angela's got the most wicked handwriting around - small & cursive. I'm so glad that I never had to mark her essays :p But it's a very unique handwriting. My mousepad from Happy House is from her. It's a nice cheery flower - just like Angela :)
I never quite believed my teacher when I was in secondary school when she said that the older you get, the fewer friends you have. All the more I doubted it when I went to JC/Poly & to Uni. Now that I'm working like a mad dog & with my friends all working like mad dogs too, I can now understand why my teacher said that back then. Besides working like mad dogs, there is a lot of balancing work to be done too & that can be so tiring. Slowly, everyone just goes off into their own lives. That is why such a roll call is so important - to think of these people & meet them for old times sake.
Another time, perhaps, for reminisance.

Got a problem?
I am always amused at how Big Papa (read: gahment) has a solution, or so-called, to every problem that is inherent in society.
Take today for example. There was an ad on TV. Well, it wasn't really an ad but rather, this organisation was a sponsor for some show, or as I see it, for propaganda. The organisation in question is the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG). Is this a joke or what?
Since time memorial, or maybe let's not go too far back. Since recorded history when immigrants from China & elsewhere in the world came to this Little Red Dot to make their living, gambling dens had already made their presence & significance in society felt. Today, it's as normal to Q to buy a lottery ticket as normal as it is to be Q-ing to pay for a bag on sale. You mean that it's taken this long to realise that it *IS* a problem and therefore, an organisation is set up to address it? Or is it saying that people these days have less self-control than our forefathers in the past that professional help is enlisted so as to prevent further destruction to personal fortunes and society?
The NCPG was appointed in 2005 to address problems of gambling. Why, we have the IR project to thank so people who have or are liable to have problems related to gambling have a helping hand or shoulder to cry on. Actually, the IR project is still in stages of infancy, or perhaps not even infancy. It's been conceived but nobody wants to take the responsibility of carrying it through. It's like a foetus conceived through some fertilisation project but nobody wants to carry it to full term - a few potential players have pulled out of their bid in the IR project. I'm digressing - back to the point.
So all the talk & concerns on how gambling will damage society. So what really *IS* the problem?
(A) Gambling really *IS* a problem. Therefore, an organisation must be set up to solve the problems that gambling poses.
(B) There is a camp that thinks that gambling is a great vice. Therefore, an organisation must be set up to appease this camp so as to show that there is a back-up/support to help the fallen ones and/or the would-be fallen ones.
As typical as things get on Little Red Dot, a committee or some organisation must be formed to appease the furore surrounding the go-ahead for a IR. Such is the state of things in a state where everyone's life is dictated - from having children to who to cast the vote for in an election. It's easy, I suppose, on an island where 4 million live in and out of that number, a fair number don't have roots to call this place home. (Actually, I feel pretty displaced too, but that's another thing altogether.)
Here on the Little Red Dot, most decisions have already been made. Problems? Quite easily solved. Afterall, no one is going to argue about what's good & what's not. So what has age-old habit got to do with personal freedom of choice?
A big debate preceeded the announcement of the arrival of IR on our shores. The discerning ones among us would know what the answer is - it is a go-ahead project. So much for public opinion, consultation papers, etc etc. A well-put up show. To appease every corner of us, even the NCPG is set up to show that adequate steps have been taken to ensure that nobody falls in too deeply with obesession for the habit. A little too late?
Whatever happened to free will, I don't know. I suppose Rousseau was right - that the condition of freedom was inherent to humanity, with the implication that all social interactions subsequent to birth imply a loss of freedom, voluntarily or involuntarily.
My problem is this - why provide counter measures when it is a fact that such an organisation can only do this much, or rather education can do this much. Afterall, it is one's personal choice to dig further & deeper into the habit. You can force the food into my mouth but I can still choose to spit it out.

'tis the season to be jolly
I'm talking about the Chinese New Year. There are several reasons why I love it, just as there are the reasons why I hate it.
Reasons to love CNY:
Ang paos This is especially so when I'm on the receiving end :) Greedy, money-faced, whatever. If they are offered to you, would you say no? 'nuff said. Heh.
Family I love my family - immediate & extended. As far as I'm concerned, I've got the most exciting & happening family ever. From infants to straight-laced accountants to a possibly schizo relative to *ahem* dodgy businessmen, this is perhaps the most colourful array of characters & personalities you'll find under one roof.
So this is the time of the year where we all find ourselves gathered under one roof, with 60 of us at the 'peak' visitation time. Imagine the madhouse my Grandpa's place becomes but that's the spirit. It's the time we all say our very delayed hellos & continue with the conversations that we left off from a year ago.
The extended family at Mum's cousin's wedding. Not a very good picture of all of us & not all of us are present in the picture either. Need a professional photographer for that ;p
Sad to say, there are many who are no longer around because their physical bodies have become tired & worn out. These dear ones will be sorely missed but they will always have a special place in my heart. Among the ones that have left, I miss my Grandmas & my Third Aunt most- miss you, love you all loads. Can't wait to see you all again :'(
Food In as much as I tell myself I'm on a diet, this is the one thing I can hardly resist at Chinese New Year. I always justify my indulgence *oops!* I mean my intake/consumption that 'tis the season to eat, drink & be jolly so gobble gobble gobble I go. After that, I'll feel guilty & I never quite resolve to never go gobble gobble gobble at family gatherings. I mean, what would my relatives say if I told them I'm on a diet "Whoa! Don't lah! Why don't eat? Get sick then you know!" or the eternal emotional blackmail line "Why don't eat? My food not nice is it? I cook your favourite. What do you want?" Sigh....
It's not even Chinese New Year yet but to date I've consumed (i)80% of a tin of cornflake cookies (ii)80% of a container of pineapple tarts (that's probably 10,000 calories given 1 pineapple tart = 70 calories) (iii)90% of a container of peanut cookies my friend, San, made.
Projected calorie input for the next week = 1,000,000
Projected calorie output for the next week = 0
Projected net calorie gain/(loss) = 1,000,000
Reasons to hate CNY:
Q&A The concern of well-meaning relatives can be such an annoyance. Since I'm not married & not seeing anyone, I'm subjected to the "When are you getting married?"/"Got boyfriend or not?" questions. If the bug doesn't stop at those questions, it goes on to the point where I get a mini lecture on why I must find myself a man ("Yes, I know but when it happens, it will. Zip")& stories of themselves when they were 27 with 3 kids running around them. Sigh...when will they ever understand that times have changed & the very simple fact that I'm not them?
Another thing I want to avoid talking about is work. Yes, yes, I'm in the noble profession but really, it annoys me when they all think that it's the easy life where I get off at 1pm or start asking me questions about things that are not within my scope. For example "You know how they calculate PSLE aggregate or not ah?" or "Can you tell me what questions will come out for exam?"
All I can say is that I'm so glad that there is Chinese New Year. Fat or not, irritating relatives or not, this is really the time where everyone gets to be jolly.
Happy New Year all!!! *woof!* (Year of the Dog)

Misery & injustice defined
I tell you what is misery defined.
My parents have been invited to a Tiffany & Co Gala Dinner in New York. I must have burnt 300 calories screaming "Unfair!", "I want to go!" at my Mum, jumping up & down in protest plus stamping my feet. Tiffany & Co Gala Dinner.
While they are at that dinner, I will be here, in Little Red Dot, on a Saturday morning, doing housework. If this is not misery, tell me what it is, please, someone. ARRRGGHHH!!
Justice, O Justice, where are you? Show forth your fairest face (pun intended) .
ARGH! I can't believe it! ARGH! ARGH! ARGH!

The Eye
Eye Story #1
It's ridiculous that I spent $120 to remove a facial scrub bead out of my left eye that was hurting for about 2 days. I felt really stupid when the specialist asked me if I had scrubbed my face & when I said I did, he was pretty sure that those little things were the cause of my eye irritation. He came to that question after examining my eye which showed no indications of bacterial, viral or contact-lens related infections - afterall, my eye wasn't even red. Besides, he had a Taiwanese paitient who had similar symptoms as me & it turned out that she used Taiwanese or Japanese skincare products. Mine's Clinique - Made in USA!
I had to endure the sting of some lotion on my eye which was actually supposed to be an anaesthetic to numb the eye. Fortunately, I didn't see how I looked but the Doc flipped my eyelid up & outwards (YYYEEEEEWWWWW!!!!) to extract that treasure of a pearl up there.
Moral of the story - believe & obey the instructions found on the labels of skincare products when they read "Do not use this product near the eyes."
Story #2
About 2 years ago, my right eye had some irritation & pain. Eye-Mo, Optrex & whatever eye stuff didn't work to ease the irritation & pain so I marched down to the specialist for help. With that machine in the clinic, good ol' Dr V found something that terrified me - a scracth on my cornea! How could it get there, or how did I ever scratch/rub my eye that it caused a scratch to the cornea?! So sigh, I was put on some treatment for the eye. I remember having to apply this ointment that would smart & blur my vision & I had to do that 3 times a day.
Fortunately, it wasn't exactly a very serious tear & healed in about 3 to 4 days. Still, it wasn't a nice experience to have to endure all kinds of lotions & chemicals in the eye during the eye examination & medication.
Moral of the story - keep your fingernails short (but mine aren't even long!). Also, listen when Mama says never to rub or scratch the eye (area).
Story #3
This happened shortly after I graduated from Leeds & was back in Singapore looking for a job. I woke up one morning to find my left eye red. I drowned the eye in eyewash of every brand but it was of no use. I paid 2 visits to the GP, who dispensed more eyedrops & eyewashes but still, to no avail - my left eye was still red. The strange thing was that the inner corner of the eye was super red, while the other half of the eyeball was normal-looking white. I got really worried & made an appointment with the specialist when this anomaly lasted 2 weeks.
The Doc spent 5 minutes examining & that was my first experience with specialist eye equipment & medication. That was when I first experienced anaesthetic in the eye & having real, proper thorough eye-check (for glaucoma, etc etc). The Doc found something in the eye that caused my red eye - an eyelash! I felt really stupid yet relieved at the same time. How could an eyelash make me look like a red-eye monster, reducing my confidence to nothing for 2 weeks. Then again, it's only an eyelash & nothing more complicated than that.
Moral of the story - be happy & contented with length of eyelashes: don't have to pray for longer eyelashes or get extensions. Mascara will do. Even with mascara, make sure it is safe for the eyes.
Total spent on the eye for matters as mentioned: $400 over 3 occasions. Imagine how many yummy meals I could have had, or new shoes, bags or clothes I could have bought. MmmMMmmMMmrrrrrrFFfffff!!!!

Re-re-wind
I have been packing my room very slowly (very, extremely slowly to be precise) in preparation for the room makeover. I came across a lot of old things - photos, books, writing, etc. These things came from various stages of my life, if I may so express it this way. I actually found my Primary 6 English compo file to things as recent as the credit card bills from late last year *snort*
As I slowly opened envelopes with cards in them and even letters from friends, I didn't know how to feel. Not that I've lost my feelings/senses but everything just felt so surreal, such as having a card which read 'Happy 17th Birthday' pop in front of me among the many things. I found old photographs of myself with family members & friends, my secondary school bus pass (remember those cards with your picture that you stuck a sticker on & you would happily flash that card at the bus-driver each time you boarded the bus?), a whole stack of uni bills for rent, my Econs notes, etc etc...
Just very few, among my many:pencil case from Primary 5, diary, A Level Econs model essays, Graduation information from uni, concession card (Sec 1) & old $1 note
You would have realised by now that I am a super hoarder. I can't imagine that I've kept so many of these things for so long. As I packed them into the boxes, I hesitated because it's like packing away my memories. Yes, I may have left the things untouched in the cupboard but when I opened up that treasure chest, it felt like a flood rushing at me. Some things I wanted to see/read, some things I just dumped into a box or throw away. Some things I wanted to re-live , some things I wished never happened.
Otherwise, it's good that while our brains may choose the memories to so sweetly & fondly remember or to shut terminate them, technology must come in & have a say in these memories.
This video was taken when I was 5. I was wearing the pink dress my aunt made for me to be worn at my other aunt's wedding because I was the flower girl. The walking baby was my cousin (who compiled about 10 video clips into a VCD for all of us) & the crawling baby was my brother.

What a whirlwind!
It's the end of the first work week of the year but I'm already tired. Doesn't sound very promising for the start of the year :(
I'm already bringing work home, I haven't exercised in a while (partly because I have to take Mum around now that she's back) - I feel fat & probably AM fat!! :(
Actually, I've never felt so lousy before for the start of the year. I'm usually very much alive & looking ahead to new years but I don't know why 2006 is different in that I'm feeling sluggish & well, unenthusiastic about the year. I think I might have fallen into Quarter-Life Crisis Part Deux. Gosh! How do I even say it? You see! Something is really wrong with me because I usually am able to verbalise but the fact that I'm unable to indicates that I'm going off my usual course. I can't pin-point what is up or down with me. I need to shut off from the world for a while to regain myself & my course before thinking & knowing what I'm thinking & doing.
When will I ever learn to ignore responsibilities & things around me so that I can live my life without being controlled by circumstances? Hello 2006..cheers!

My Chinese New Year Dress!! :)
The Big Three-O
I got this from an email from a friend. It certainly makes heading for the Three-O more dignified :p
Long read but I love the punchline :) Medal for you if you get there!
This was written by Andy Rooney from CBS 60 Minutes. Andy Rooney says:"As I grow in age, I value women who are over 30 most of all. "
Here are just a few reasons why:
1) A woman over 30 will never wake you in the middle of the night to ask,"What are you thinking?" She doesn't care what you think.
2) If a woman over 30 doesn't want to watch the game, she doesn't sit around whining about it! She does something she wants to do. And, it's usually somethingmore interesting.
3) A woman over 30 knows herself well enough to be assured in who she is, what she is, what she wants and from whom. Few women past the age of 30 give a damn what you might think about her or what she's doing.
4) Women over 30 are dignified. They seldom have a screaming match with you at the opera or in the middle of an expensive restaurant. Of course, if you deserve it,they won'th esitate to shoot you, if they think they can get away with it.
5) Older women are generous with praise, often undeserved. They know what it's like to be unappreciated.
6) A woman over 30 has the self-assurance to introduce you to her women friends. A younger woman with a man will often ignore even her best friend because she doesn't trust the guy with other women. Women over 30 couldn't care less if you're attracted to her friends because she knows her friends won't betray her.
7) Women get psychic as they age. You never have to confess your sins to a woman over 30. They always know.
8) A woman over 30 looks good wearing bright red lipstick. This is not true of younger women.
9) Once you get past a wrinkle or two, a woman over 30 is far sexier than her younger counterpart.
10) Older women are forthright and honest. They'll tell you right off if you are a jerk if you are acting like one! You don't ever have to wonder where you stand with her.
Yes, we praise women over 30 for a multitude of reasons. Unfortunately, it's not reciprocal. For every stunning, smart, well-coiffed hot woman of 30+,there is a bald, paunchy relic in yellow pants making a fool of himself with some 22-year-old waitress. Ladies, I apologize. For all those men who say, "Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free", here's an update for you. Nowadays 80% of women areagainst marriage, why?
Because women realize it's not worth buying an entire Pig, just to get a little sausage.

It's 2006...and what do I want?
Hur, was having a lie in & having silly little random thoughts. What a great start to the new year :p
1. Dare myself to go for a Brazilian wax. I don't know for what. Not like I'm doing some swimsuit photoshoot or whatever but for the sake of it? Endure the pain plus some woman staring into my 'forbidden city' ..just what am I thinking about?
2. Look out for a Takeshi Kaneshiro look-alike. If anyone says that he's not good-looking, please get your eyes checked. Love his jaw-line! Don't like his hair long though. Again, what am I thinking? What are the chances of a guy looking this good? A guy friend of mine said something to annoy me. "He's so pretty good-looking..maybe he's female." ARRGGHH!!! Stupid friend of mine probably jealous..hehehe!
(Go to: http://www.takeshikaneshiro.us/ for many, many, many pictures of TK. Excuse me, I need to take a cold shower now :p)

Maybe I shouldn't have lie-ins in bed so I will stop thinking of difficult & out of reach things. :p
