Attack of the bugs & hacks

I think I have just fallen prey to spyware or some stupid bug (tell me who isn't these days?) in my PC. My Spybot has failed me, it seems. My Norton has decided to work according to ??? and me thinks that the PC is getting screwed! Why?!! Why?!! Why...are people so evil & vile enough to create bugs to cause pain & suffering to another's computer?

It is shocking to know the extent and amount of hacking and virus that goes on these days. And you think that it's just the PC that gets it? I shudder to think that entire societies come to a standstill all because of what some idiot has planted into computerised systems and suddenly find that functions we take for granted go awry.

Imagine the heavy price tag of such a damage. It's going to be crazy! Have to spend time scanning & mopping up the system for all these irritating bugs & spyware or hire the experts to do it - waste money!! I will not be surprised if investigating a security incident will cost more than actual financial losses and/or introducing appropriate controls. Even George Bush's credit card details can be found somewhere (OK, just saying for fun). I'm still tickled by the hacking of Paris Hilton's gadget..hehehe!!

Because this is a problem that respects no boundaries (in every sense of the word), it is a big big big headache where jurisdictional issues are concerned. What I find really scary is that with the progress of technology and technical loopholes, the tech savvy ones can get away from the clutches of the law because of their superior knowledge. This improbability of detection is a very serious problem because it attacks the very pillars on which the Rule of Law stands (Argh!! I sound like I'm writing some uni assignment).

The question that bugs me is this - should there really be a distinction between traditional real world crime vis-a-vis such crime committed on cyberspace? Afterall, the nature of things on the Net move so quickly that it's almost impossible to catch up with these perpetrators real-time.

I'm losing my trend of thoughts. I think the next entry should be a less profound one. I shall write about something frivolous & bimbotic!
